Heart scan before surgery may spot who will crash
NCT ID NCT07509255
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study looked at whether a quick heart ultrasound before anesthesia can help predict which patients will experience a dangerous drop in blood pressure after going under. Researchers analyzed data from 64 adults having elective abdominal surgery. They found that certain heart function patterns were linked to higher risk, which could one day help doctors tailor anesthesia care to each patient.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
What this could lead to
If the findings hold, this could help doctors identify patients at risk for dangerous drops in blood pressure during surgery, allowing for more personalized care.
What could go wrong
This was a small, exploratory study with only 64 participants. The results are not yet confirmed and need larger trials before changing practice.
