Can a computer program and a parent handbook curb teen drinking?
NCT ID NCT07086508
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This trial tests whether a web-based program called eCHECKUP TO GO, alone or combined with an electronic parent handbook, can reduce alcohol use and related problems in high school juniors and seniors. About 2,500 teens aged 15–18 and their parents participate from across the U.S. The study compares the programs against each other and a control group to see which approach works best.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
e-CHECKUP TO GO (web-based personalized feedback program) and e-Parent Intervention (electronic parent handbook)
What this could lead to
If effective, this approach could give schools and families a practical, scalable tool to reduce underage drinking and its negative consequences among older teens.
What could go wrong
The interventions rely on self-reported drinking and may not work for all teens. The trial is large but still a single study, so results need replication before broad recommendations.
