Engineered immune cells take on virus in transplant patients

NCT ID NCT06119256

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This early-phase trial tests whether specially engineered immune cells (EBV-TCR-T cells) can safely control Epstein-Barr virus infections in people who have had a stem cell transplant. About 12 participants will receive one to three infusions of donor-derived cells. The main goal is to check for side effects and see if the virus levels drop.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

EBV-TCR-T cells (immune cells engineered to target the Epstein-Barr virus)

What this could lead to

If it works, this could point toward a treatment for EBV infections after stem cell transplants, reducing complications.

What could go wrong

This is a very early phase 1 trial with only 12 participants, so it may not show clear benefit or could have unexpected side effects.
