Heart valve time bomb: should we operate before symptoms strike?

Summary

This large international trial aims to settle a major heart care question: is it better to replace a severely narrowed heart valve early, even when a patient feels fine, or to wait and watch? It will enroll over 2,800 adults with severe but symptomless aortic stenosis and randomly assign them to either early valve replacement surgery or careful monitoring. The goal is to see if early surgery leads to longer life, fewer hospitalizations for heart failure, and better overall health.
