Battle of the scopes: which surgery is best for early rectal cancer?

NCT ID NCT02885142

First seen Nov 18, 2025 · Last updated Jun 13, 2026 · Updated 25 times

Summary

This study compared two procedures for removing early-stage rectal cancer or precancerous growths: endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD, done through a scope) and transanal endoscopic microsurgery (TEM, a surgical approach). The goal was to see which method more completely removes the tumor. The study included 368 adults with early rectal cancer or adenomas. It was terminated early, so results are limited.
