Study aims to spare preterm babies from unnecessary heart treatments

NCT ID NCT03782610

First seen Mar 13, 2026 · Last updated May 15, 2026 · Updated 11 times

Summary

This study follows 526 preterm infants born before 30 weeks who have a common heart condition called PDA, where a fetal blood vessel stays open after birth. Researchers want to find out which babies will close this vessel on their own, so they can avoid treatments that may cause harm. By using heart ultrasounds and blood/urine tests in the first month, they hope to create a tool to guide safer, more personalized care.
