Simple steps after birth could boost baby health
NCT ID NCT07535684
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tested a simple set of steps called Early Essential Newborn Care (EENC) for babies born in a hospital. The steps include drying the baby right away, placing them skin-to-skin on the mother, delaying cord clamping, keeping them warm, and starting breastfeeding within the first hour. Researchers compared 162 mother-baby pairs who got EENC with those who got standard hospital care to see if it improved breastfeeding, warmth, and overall health.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
What this could lead to
If EENC proves better, hospitals may adopt this simple, low-cost care to improve newborn health and breastfeeding rates.
What could go wrong
This is a single, small study at one hospital. Results may not apply elsewhere, and the routine care group also received good standard care.
