New pain block could help chest trauma patients breathe on their own sooner
NCT ID NCT05920109
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether giving a specific nerve block (ESP block) within 6 hours of a severe chest injury can reduce the number of days patients need a ventilator. The block numbs the chest wall to ease pain and improve breathing. 400 adults with at least 3 rib fractures will be randomly assigned to get the block plus standard care, or standard care alone.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Ropivacaine
What this could lead to
If it works, this could reduce the number of days patients with severe chest injuries need a breathing machine, potentially speeding recovery.
What could go wrong
This is an early-stage trial with no prior large-scale evidence. The nerve block may not work as expected, and there are risks like catheter failure or rare complications.
