Growth factor gel trial aims to mend eardrums without surgery

NCT ID NCT04960384

Summary

This study tested whether a gel containing a natural growth factor (FGF-2) could help heal long-standing holes in the eardrum. Fifty-two adults with perforations that hadn't healed for at least six months were randomly assigned to receive either the active gel or a placebo gel. The main goal was to see if the treatment could close the hole and improve hearing, offering a potential non-surgical option.
