Ear pellets and statins: a new combo for high cholesterol?
NCT ID NCT07624604
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether adding ear acupressure (small pellets on specific ear points) to the standard cholesterol drug atorvastatin can lower blood fats and improve phlegm-dampness symptoms better than a sham ear treatment plus atorvastatin. Eighty adults with dyslipidemia and phlegm-dampness syndrome will be randomly assigned to one of two groups for 10 sessions over about 50 days. The goal is to see if this traditional Chinese medicine approach can boost cholesterol control and symptom relief.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
auricular acupressure (ear pellets) plus atorvastatin 20 mg
What this could lead to
If it works, this could offer a safe, low-cost add-on to standard statin therapy for better cholesterol control and symptom relief in people with dyslipidemia and phlegm-dampness syndrome.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage trial (80 people) that hasn't started yet. The ear acupressure effect may be no better than a placebo, and results may not apply to other populations.
