Immunotherapy combo shows promise against stomach cancer in early trial

NCT ID NCT04221555

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This phase 2 trial tested adding the immunotherapy drug durvalumab to a standard chemotherapy regimen (docetaxel, oxaliplatin, S-1) before and after surgery in 68 patients with resectable stomach or gastroesophageal junction cancer. The main goal was to see how many patients had a complete disappearance of the tumor after treatment. The study also tracked how long patients remained cancer-free after surgery.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

durvalumab (an immunotherapy drug) plus docetaxel, oxaliplatin, and S-1 (chemotherapy drugs)

What this could lead to

If successful, this combination could improve the chance of eliminating the tumor before surgery and delay cancer return after surgery.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-phase trial (68 people) with no control group, so results may not be definitive. Immunotherapy can cause immune-related side effects.
