Knee surgery patients may soon ditch opioids for a safer pill
NCT ID NCT06423716
First seen Oct 31, 2025 · Last updated Apr 25, 2026 · Updated 20 times
Summary
This study tests whether giving duloxetine (an antidepressant that also eases pain) before and after knee replacement surgery can lower the need for opioids. About 150 adults with knee osteoarthritis will take duloxetine or a placebo, and researchers will track their pain, opioid use, and side effects for one week after surgery. If successful, this cheap medication could become a new standard for safer pain management.
