Nightly eye drops may keep Kids' vision sharp longer
NCT ID NCT07567040
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Aug 13, 2026 · Updated 6 times
Summary
This study tests whether a nightly drop of low-dose atropine in both eyes can delay the start of nearsightedness in children aged 6–11 who are not yet nearsighted. Over 600 kids will be randomly assigned to get either the atropine drops or placebo drops for two years. The main goal is to see if fewer children become nearsighted in the atropine group compared to the placebo group.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Atropine sulfate 0.05% eye drops
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this could give children a simple way to delay or prevent nearsightedness, reducing the need for glasses or contacts later.
- What could go wrong
- This is a Phase 3 trial, but results may not apply to all children. Atropine drops can cause light sensitivity or blurry near vision, and the effect may wear off after stopping.
