DMT depression trial: is the trip or the biology the real healer?

NCT ID NCT06927076

First seen Apr 04, 2026 · Last updated May 14, 2026 · Updated 6 times

Summary

This study aims to find out whether the antidepressant effects of DMT come from the psychedelic experience itself or from biological changes in the brain. Researchers will give DMT to 112 adults with major depression, but some will also receive propofol to block the psychedelic experience. By comparing groups, they hope to understand what truly drives the mood improvement.
