Heart drug tested as potential lifeline for severe alcohol hepatitis
NCT ID NCT05014087
Summary
This study tested whether digoxin, a medication normally used for heart conditions, could help control severe liver inflammation caused by heavy alcohol use. It involved 23 hospitalized patients with severe alcohol-associated hepatitis, who were randomly assigned to receive either intravenous digoxin or no digoxin for up to 28 days. The main goal was to see if digoxin reduced specific markers of inflammation in the blood, as a first step toward finding new treatments for this serious condition.
