Dietary hope: new study tests food as medicine for kidney cysts
NCT ID NCT06786260
First seen Nov 01, 2025 · Last updated May 21, 2026 · Updated 29 times
Summary
This pilot study tests whether a carefully designed diet (low salt, limited caffeine, high potassium, low phosphate, limited protein and carbs, with adequate water) can slow the growth of kidney cysts in people with autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD). Researchers will compare 30 adults on the special diet to those on a regular diet over 12 months, measuring changes in kidney volume and urine markers. The goal is to find a safe, accessible way to manage disease progression without medication.
