VR headset could replace eye patches for lazy eye in kids
NCT ID NCT06380517
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether watching specially designed movies through a virtual reality headset for 1 hour a day, 6 days a week, can improve vision in children with lazy eye (amblyopia) as effectively as the standard treatment of wearing an eye patch for 2 hours daily. The trial involves 238 children aged 4 to 7 years. The goal is to see if the VR approach is a good alternative to patching.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Luminopia virtual reality headset showing dichoptic movies
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this could offer a more engaging and convenient alternative to eye patching for treating lazy eye in young children.
- What could go wrong
- This is a Phase 3 trial, but results may not show non-inferiority to patching. The treatment requires consistent use and may not work for all children.
