New drug may reduce pain and opioid use in tiniest patients

Summary
This study tests whether dexmedetomidine, a sedative that does not slow breathing, can reduce the need for opioids in premature babies who need a breathing tube. About 246 infants born before 32 weeks will receive either the drug or a placebo. The goal is to see if it helps them come off the ventilator sooner and supports better brain development.
