New drug may reduce opioid use in ventilated preemies

Summary
This study tests a drug called dexmedetomidine in premature babies who need a breathing tube. The goal is to see if it can reduce the need for strong painkillers (opioids) and help babies come off the ventilator sooner, while protecting their brain development. About 246 babies born before 32 weeks will be randomly assigned to receive either the drug or a placebo.
