New pain block combo tested for cancer surgery recovery
NCT ID NCT06130670
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tested whether adding dexmedetomidine to the numbing drug bupivacaine improves pain relief after lower abdominal cancer surgery. Researchers compared two types of nerve blocks: quadratus lumborum and epidural. Fifty-four adults aged 18–70 participated. The main goal was to see how long pain relief lasted before patients needed more pain medicine.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
dexmedetomidine added to bupivacaine
What this could lead to
If it works, this could point toward a better way to manage pain after major cancer surgery, possibly reducing the need for strong opioids.
What could go wrong
This is a small, completed study with only 54 participants. Results may not apply to all patients, and the best block type is still uncertain.
