New hope to keep elderly minds clear after major surgery

NCT ID NCT05436964

Summary

This study tested whether giving a sedative called dexmedetomidine during surgery could help prevent delirium, a serious state of confusion, in patients aged 65 and older having major abdominal operations. Researchers compared the drug to a placebo (saltwater) in 268 patients across multiple hospitals. The main goal was to see if the drug lowered the rate of delirium in the days following surgery.
