NCT ID NCT05845398
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This early-stage trial tested a new drug called DCR-AUD in 16 healthy adults who are social drinkers. The drug is designed to reduce the effects of alcohol by targeting the liver. The main goal was to check safety and how the body processes the drug, not to treat alcohol use disorder yet. Participants received multiple doses and had up to 10 alcohol interaction tests over 24 weeks.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
DCR-AUD (a synthetic RNA drug that targets the liver)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could lead to a new treatment that helps people with alcohol use disorder drink less by reducing the pleasurable effects of alcohol.
What could go wrong
This is a very early Phase 1 trial with only 16 healthy volunteers, not people with alcohol use disorder. It only tests safety and how the drug works in the body, not whether it actually helps reduce drinking.
