Study aims to spare breast cancer patients unnecessary surgery

NCT ID NCT01841749

Summary

This study looked at whether checking just the first few lymph nodes (sentinel node biopsy) during a mastectomy for a type of early breast cancer called DCIS could help patients. The goal was to see if this approach could prevent the need for a more extensive lymph node removal surgery if doctors later found invasive cancer. Researchers enrolled 228 women with DCIS who were scheduled for a mastectomy to test this method.
