Could a TB drug make brain zaps work better for depression?

NCT ID NCT05591677

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tests whether taking D-cycloserine (a drug originally used for TB) before a non-invasive brain stimulation therapy called iTBS can improve depression symptoms more than the stimulation alone. About 180 adults with treatment-resistant depression will receive daily iTBS sessions for 4 weeks, along with either a low dose, high dose, or placebo of D-cycloserine. Researchers will track mood changes and side effects to see if the combination is safe and effective.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

D-cycloserine

What this could lead to

If it works, this could point toward a more effective, drug-enhanced brain stimulation treatment for depression.

What could go wrong

This is a mid-stage trial with 180 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The drug may cause side effects or not improve depression beyond the stimulation alone.
