New magnetic catheter aims to give control back to men with urinary retention
NCT ID NCT05848037
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tested a new type of catheter for men who need long-term catheters due to urinary retention. The CymActive catheter has a magnetic valve that lets users control when they urinate, unlike standard catheters that drain continuously. The study aimed to see if it was more comfortable and improved quality of life compared to standard Foley catheters, but it was terminated early with only 6 participants.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
CymActive catheter device (a magnetically controlled catheter)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could offer a more comfortable and dignified option for men who need long-term catheters.
What could go wrong
This was a very small, early study that was terminated, so results are limited. The device may not be better than standard catheters and could have similar risks like infection.
