Blood test may predict cancer recurrence in head and neck patients
NCT ID NCT06479070
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study is testing whether measuring circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) in the blood can predict if cancer will come back after radiation therapy. Researchers will collect blood samples from 188 patients with advanced head and neck cancer before, during, and after treatment. The goal is to see if a drop in ctDNA levels one month after treatment can forecast progression-free survival at two years.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
What this could lead to
If successful, this could lead to a simple blood test to predict cancer recurrence earlier, helping doctors tailor follow-up care.
What could go wrong
This is an observational study, not a treatment trial. It may not show a clear link between ctDNA levels and outcomes, and results may not apply to all patients.
