Salt water trick may prevent lung collapse during biopsy

NCT ID NCT06340178

First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests whether injecting a small amount of salt water into the space around the lung during a CT-guided lung biopsy can lower the chance of a pneumothorax (collapsed lung). Researchers will also position patients so the biopsy targets gravity-dependent areas. About 198 adults with suspicious lung lesions will take part. The goal is to see if this simple fluid injection makes the procedure safer.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

sodium chloride (sterile salt water)

What this could lead to

If it works, this could make lung biopsies safer by lowering the chance of a collapsed lung.

What could go wrong

This is an early-stage procedure study, not a drug trial. The benefit may be small or not apply to all patients. Risks like bleeding or air embolism still exist.
