Freezing out dead tissue: new tool could transform pancreatic necrosis treatment

NCT ID NCT06553651

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tests a freezing device called a cryoprobe to remove dead tissue from the pancreas in people with a serious complication of acute pancreatitis. Instead of using standard tools like forceps or snares, the cryoprobe freezes the dead tissue so it can be pulled out more easily. The trial will enroll 20 adults and check if the method is safe and removes at least 70% of the dead tissue.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

cryoprobe (freezing device)

What this could lead to

If successful, this freezing method could make it easier and safer to remove dead pancreatic tissue, reducing complications and improving recovery for patients with pancreatic necrosis.

What could go wrong

This is a very small early study with only 20 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The freezing technique may not work better than current methods and could still cause bleeding or infection.
