New ultrasound dye could stop 3 in 10 unnecessary emergency surgeries for ovarian torsion

NCT ID NCT06677554

First seen Apr 25, 2026 · Last updated May 16, 2026 · Updated 4 times

Summary

This study tests whether adding a contrast dye to standard ultrasound can more accurately diagnose ovarian torsion (a twisted ovary) in women with sudden pelvic pain. Currently, about 30% of emergency surgeries for suspected torsion find no problem. The trial will involve 256 women and compare the rate of unnecessary surgeries between those who get the contrast ultrasound and those who don't. If successful, this simple imaging test could prevent many needless operations.
