New combo approach aims to stop pneumonia in ventilator patients
NCT ID NCT07555236
First seen May 01, 2026 · Last updated May 25, 2026 · Updated 4 times
Summary
This study tests whether using two automated methods together—draining secretions from below the vocal cords and keeping the breathing tube's cuff pressure steady—can reduce the risk of stomach or mouth fluids entering the lungs (microaspiration) in critically ill patients on ventilators. About 800 adults expected to need a breathing tube for more than 48 hours will be randomly assigned to one of four groups: both methods, one method alone, or standard care. The goal is to see if this combined strategy lowers the chance of developing ventilator-associated pneumonia.
