Simple cord pull may cut bleeding risk after birth
NCT ID NCT01044082
First seen Feb 18, 2026 · Last updated May 15, 2026 · Updated 11 times
Summary
This study looked at whether gently pulling on the umbilical cord (controlled cord traction) during the third stage of labor can reduce the chance of heavy bleeding after vaginal delivery. Over 4,300 women who received standard medication to prevent bleeding were randomly assigned to either have the cord pulled or to wait for the placenta to come out on its own. The goal was to see if this simple technique lowers the number of women who lose more than 500 mL of blood after birth.
