Scientists probe hidden cause of deadly muscle loss in lung disease

NCT ID NCT04939454

Summary

This study aimed to understand why many people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) experience severe muscle wasting, a condition linked to much higher mortality. Researchers compared muscle tissue samples from 22 COPD patients, some with muscle loss and some without, to see if specific cells called 'fibrocytes' play a role. The goal was to gather basic knowledge about the cause of this muscle weakness to inform future treatments.
