Zap vs. pedal: can electrical muscle stimulation help COPD patients breathe easier?
NCT ID NCT02656667
Summary
This study tested two different ways to strengthen leg muscles as part of a standard 3-4 week pulmonary rehabilitation program for people with severe COPD. Researchers compared using a special electrical stimulation device on the thigh muscles versus using a stationary exercise bike. The main goal was to see which method better improved patients' ability to stand up and sit down repeatedly, a key measure of daily function.
