New lung camera could spot cancer in real time
NCT ID NCT01931579
First seen Jun 27, 2026 ยท Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tested a special microscope on a thin probe (confocal endo-microscopy) that doctors can use during a bronchoscopy to look at lung nodules up close. The goal was to see if it can help tell whether a nodule is cancer or not, right then and there. 120 adults with a lung nodule took part. The probe was inserted through the same tube used for standard navigational bronchoscopy, and images were recorded before taking a tissue sample.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only โ not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- confocal endo-microscopy device (CELLVIZIO)
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this could give doctors a real-time way to see whether a lung nodule is cancerous during a bronchoscopy, potentially reducing the need for additional procedures.
- What could go wrong
- This is a completed early-stage study with 120 participants, so results may not apply to all patients. The technology may not always clearly distinguish benign from malignant nodules.
