Compression stockings may let patients skip Long-Term antibiotics for recurring skin infections

NCT ID NCT07549594

First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests whether wearing compression stockings alone can prevent repeat episodes of erysipelas (a bacterial skin infection) as well as the usual approach of antibiotics plus stockings. About 200 adults who have had at least two infections in the same leg will be randomly assigned to one year of either compression therapy alone or compression plus daily oral penicillin. If compression alone works, it could spare patients from long-term antibiotic use and its side effects.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
Phenoxymethylpenicillin (oral penicillin) and compression stockings
What this could lead to
If compression alone works as well as antibiotics plus compression, patients could avoid long-term antibiotics and their side effects.
What could go wrong
This is a Phase 4 trial with 200 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. Compression alone might not prevent infections as effectively as the combination.
