First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study compares two common steroids, hydrocortisone and prednisolone, in 1,600 adults hospitalized with severe community-acquired pneumonia. The goal is to see which one reduces deaths within 30 days. Participants are randomly assigned to one of the two treatments.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
corticosteroids (hydrocortisone and prednisolone)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could identify which steroid is better for treating severe pneumonia and potentially lower death rates.
What could go wrong
This is a phase 4 trial, so both drugs are already used; the difference may be small. Side effects like infections and high blood sugar are possible.
