ICU phosphate study: less may be more
NCT ID NCT07288944
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study will compare two standard approaches for replacing phosphate in critically ill patients in the intensive care unit (ICU). One approach starts replacement at a higher phosphate level (liberal), the other at a lower level (restrictive). The goal is to see if the restrictive approach reduces the amount of phosphate given while keeping patients just as healthy. About 2,400 adult ICU patients will take part, and the main measure is how many days they are alive and out of the ICU within 30 days.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
phosphate replacement protocols (liberal vs. restrictive)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show that a more restrictive phosphate replacement strategy is safe and reduces unnecessary treatment in ICU patients.
What could go wrong
This is an early-stage protocol comparison, not a test of a new drug. The results may not apply to all ICU settings, and the study hasn't started recruiting yet.
