Can less be more? new study tests lower drug dose for heart rhythm disorder
NCT ID NCT07273994
First seen Jan 11, 2026 · Last updated May 15, 2026 · Updated 19 times
Summary
This study compares two doses of the heart medication amiodarone in people with persistent atrial fibrillation (an irregular heartbeat) after they receive an electrical shock to restore normal rhythm. The goal is to see if a lower daily dose (100 mg) works as well as the standard dose (200 mg) at keeping the heart in rhythm for a year, while causing fewer side effects. About 312 adults will take the full dose for the first month, then be randomly assigned to continue the full dose or switch to the lower dose. Researchers will also look at how genes affect the drug's action.
