Grandparents as virus shields: LA program tests if mentoring kids boosts immunity

NCT ID NCT05534425

Summary

This study is testing whether a community program where older adults mentor elementary school children can help strengthen their natural defenses against respiratory viruses like colds, flu, and COVID-19. Researchers will enroll 160 older African-American adults from South Los Angeles who are already participating in the mentoring program. They will measure immune system activity in the blood to see if the social connection and activity of mentoring helps the body fight viruses better.
