Can a preferred way to talk stop harmful behaviors?

NCT ID NCT07278544

Summary

This study is testing if using a person's favorite way to communicate (like a tablet app or picture cards) helps reduce challenging behaviors more effectively and for longer than a less-preferred method. It involves 60 people with autism or intellectual disabilities who have little speech and exhibit behaviors like self-injury. Researchers will compare what happens when caregivers use a preferred versus a non-preferred communication tool during and after treatment.
