Experimental cocktail aims to shrink liver tumors in tough colorectal cancer

NCT ID NCT07128355

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This pilot study is testing whether combining two immunotherapy drugs (botensilimab and balstilimab) with precise, high-dose radiation (SBRT) can safely treat colorectal cancer that has spread to the liver and is not responding to standard chemotherapy. The study will enroll 15 adults whose cancer is a specific type called non-MSI-H or pMMR. The main focus is on safety, but researchers will also check if the treated liver tumors shrink.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Botensilimab and balstilimab (immunotherapy drugs) plus stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT)

What this could lead to

If successful, this combination could offer a new treatment option for people with a hard-to-treat form of colorectal cancer that has spread to the liver.

What could go wrong

This is a very early, small pilot study with only 15 people, so results may not apply broadly. The main goal is safety, not effectiveness, and there is a risk of serious side effects from the radiation or immunotherapy.
