New hope to keep advanced colon cancer at bay: major trial tests powerful drug combo

Summary

This large, late-stage trial is testing if adding an immunotherapy drug (atezolizumab) to a standard, strong chemotherapy combination can better control advanced colorectal cancer that has spread and cannot be surgically removed. It will enroll about 238 patients with specific tumor characteristics to see if the new combination helps keep the cancer from growing longer and improves outcomes. Patients will be randomly assigned to receive either the standard chemo or the chemo plus the immunotherapy drug.
