Biopsy clues may predict cancer spread without surgery

NCT ID NCT03336658

First seen May 08, 2026 · Last updated Jun 05, 2026 · Updated 5 times

Summary

This study examined tumor budding—tiny clusters of cancer cells—in biopsy samples from 150 colorectal cancer patients. Researchers used a special stain to count these buds and then applied a mathematical model to predict whether the cancer had spread to lymph nodes or other organs. The goal was to see if this method could accurately forecast disease progression and survival without needing surgery. No treatment was given; this was purely an observation to improve future diagnosis.
