Could a simple block test detect 'Silent' brain fog in liver disease?
NCT ID NCT06619106
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This pilot study tests a new cognitive test using building blocks to quickly screen for minimal hepatic encephalopathy (MHE), a subtle brain complication in people with liver disease. Researchers will compare the test's accuracy against standard methods in 100 adults with liver fibrosis, cirrhosis, or porto-systemic shunts. If proven reliable, it could offer a faster, simpler way to diagnose MHE.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
cognitive test using building blocks
What this could lead to
If successful, this could provide a quick, reliable screening tool for minimal hepatic encephalopathy, helping doctors diagnose it earlier and more accurately.
What could go wrong
This is a small pilot study (100 participants) testing a new tool against existing tests. It may not prove accurate enough or may not work in broader populations.
