Smart wire could reveal clot secrets during stroke treatment
NCT ID NCT04993079
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This first-in-human study tested a new smart guidewire (Clotild®) in 45 stroke patients undergoing emergency clot removal. The wire helps guide the removal tool and also measures the clot's electrical properties to determine its composition. The main goal was to check safety, such as whether the wire causes blood vessel damage, and to see if it can accurately tell what the clot is made of.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Clotild® Smart Guidewire System (a device used to guide clot removal tools and measure clot characteristics)
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this device could help doctors better understand clot composition during stroke treatment, potentially improving future clot removal procedures.
- What could go wrong
- This is a very early, small study focused on safety and feasibility. The device may not provide useful measurements or could cause vessel injury. Results may not apply to all stroke patients.
