Engineered immune cells take aim at Hard-to-Treat lupus
NCT ID NCT07659704
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This trial tests a one-time treatment called CAR-T cell therapy for people with systemic lupus erythematosus (lupus) that hasn't improved with standard medications. The therapy uses a patient's own immune cells, which are modified in a lab to find and destroy the B cells that drive lupus. The study will check if the treatment is safe and whether it can reduce disease activity and symptoms.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
CD19-directed CAR-T cells
What this could lead to
If it works, this could offer a new treatment option for people with severe lupus that doesn't respond to standard therapies, potentially leading to long-term disease control without ongoing medication.
What could go wrong
This is an early-phase trial with only 16 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. CAR-T therapy can cause serious side effects like cytokine release syndrome and infections.
