Do faster aligner changes harm your roots? new study investigates

NCT ID NCT07522216

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study looks at whether changing clear aligners every 7 days or every 14 days affects tooth root shortening and pain. Fifty-two adults with mild to moderate crowding are randomly assigned to one of two wear schedules. Researchers measure root length from X-rays taken before and after treatment, and track pain levels. The goal is to find out which schedule is safer for tooth roots.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

orthodontic clear aligner wear protocol (7-day vs 14-day)

What this could lead to

If successful, this could help orthodontists choose the safest aligner wear schedule to minimize root damage and discomfort.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage study with only 52 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. Root resorption is a known risk of orthodontic treatment regardless of wear protocol.
