Sling or surgery? new trial tests best fix for broken collarbone
NCT ID NCT06981065
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study compares two treatments for a specific type of broken collarbone (displaced lateral clavicle fracture) in adults. One group gets surgery with a plate and screws, the other uses a simple sling and physiotherapy. The goal is to see if the non-surgical option works just as well for recovery of arm and shoulder function.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Simple sling and physiotherapy or surgical plate and screws
What this could lead to
If non-surgical treatment works as well as surgery, patients could avoid an operation and still recover good shoulder function.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage trial with only 96 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. Non-surgical treatment might not work as well for some fracture types.
