New chemo cocktail targets tough leukemias

NCT ID NCT02115295

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This phase 2 trial is testing a combination of four chemotherapy drugs—cladribine, idarubicin, cytarabine, and venetoclax—in people with acute myeloid leukemia, high-risk myelodysplastic syndrome, or blast-phase chronic myeloid leukemia. The goal is to see if this mix can kill cancer cells more effectively and improve survival. The study is recruiting 508 participants at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

cladribine, idarubicin, cytarabine, and venetoclax (chemotherapy drugs)

What this could lead to

If successful, this combination could improve remission rates and survival for people with hard-to-treat blood cancers.

What could go wrong

This is a mid-stage trial, so results are not yet proven. Chemotherapy drugs have significant side effects, and the combination may not work for everyone.
