New sedative ciprofol may be safer for emergency intubation in ICU

NCT ID NCT06344949

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tests whether ciprofol, a newer sedative, causes fewer drops in blood pressure than the standard drug propofol when ICU patients need an emergency breathing tube. About 100 critically ill adults will receive one of the two drugs before intubation. The goal is to find a safer sedation method for these high-risk procedures.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Ciprofol

What this could lead to

If ciprofol proves safer, it could offer a more stable sedation option for emergency intubations in the ICU, reducing complications like low blood pressure.

What could go wrong

This is a small pilot study with only 100 patients, so results may not apply broadly. The drug is new and its advantages over propofol are not yet proven.
