First seen Jan 09, 2026 · Last updated May 15, 2026 · Updated 15 times

Summary

This study looked at whether chewing gum (with or without sugar) can reduce pain, fear, and crying in children aged 7 to 12 during blood draws. A total of 144 children were randomly assigned to chew sugared gum, sugar-free gum, or no gum. Researchers measured pain and fear using simple rating scales and recorded how long each child cried. The goal was to see if this easy, low-cost method could make needle procedures less stressful for kids.
